Josh Harkema

Colleen Cornez

Editor in Chief – Chief of Chiefing

Josh Harkema is currently studying English at the University of Calgary, he plans on completing a B.A. in English in 2019 and hopes to have a Ph. D before the inevitable heat death of the universe. Josh is a skilled structural editor of fiction and has edited a number of pieces over the course of the last few years.

Josh’s academic interests include psychoanalysis, deconstruction, queer theory, and anything related to Lacan. Josh has a particular interest–as of this moment–in Lee Edelman, Tim Dean, Jacques Derrida, Jacques Lacan, Barbara Johnson, and most importantly the works of Sigmund Freud. Although, he has been known to shift his focus upon reading something new, shiny, and thought provoking.

As to fiction, Josh prefers to read–when he has time–the works of Isaac Asimov, George R. R. Martin, Terry Goodkind, and basically anything with a hard science-fiction or fantasy bent. Right now Josh spends his free time watching The Expanse, The 100, he is eagerly awaiting American Gods, can’t get enough of The Blacklist, Colony, Designated Survivor, etc. Without a tonne of spare time, Josh prefers to spend his evenings laying in bed, watching compelling TV; there is only so much hard reading one can be expected to do in a day.

Josh’s works of academic writing and fiction can be found on his website at https://joshharkema.com. Feel free to email him at josh@thequillmagazine.org. Or, if you’re feeling adventurous most days he can be found pacing anxiously in front of Social Sciences on the U of C campus.
